yes! that's it. I thought you had referenced it on substack but I forgot I had recently read it in your book. A different painting by van Gogh but equally beautiful.
I love this, Andy! I've been fascinated of late with the idea of a dark retreat (and have actually signed up for one, but it's not til 2027), so this poem landed into the pool of curiosity and pull for me! Thank you!
It may have been from my poem "Wind in the Wheat" in my book "On the Edge of Knowing." It was inspired by Van Gogh's Wheat Field with Cypresses.
And a lovely piece! I love the second stanza.

Wait, what is a dark retreat?? That sounds intriguing! I’m glad the timing of this poem met your own moment of curiosity.
I have such affection for the small words in this poem
thanks, Adriana!
Your poem is gorgeous and speaks volumes to me , even with it's relative concision, Andy.
thank you, Nancy. I’m so glad it stirred something in you
Beautiful. The words in the poem perfectly invoke the imagery of the painting.
Oh this is incredible. The words, imagery, how you've used space. Feels like an echo.
thanks, Kalia! Your comment about it feeling like an echo is so interesting. That was not intended but I can see what you mean.
