May I Remember
1.
I love it, I do—
the bright blue,
van Gogh sky
hanging its light above
all I adore on this
busy green earth.
but
all that illumination
all that eye-squinting
incandescence
blots out quiet knowing
like a noon-day
moon.
2.
Summon night to light the path
I say. Come darkness,
unroll your inky uncertainty.
3.
When night arrives in unyielding
blackness, I fall asleep dreaming
of being as small as a star.
_Drafted September 28 2025, edited June 2 2026Credit to Sam Aureli for introducing me to Van Gogh’s Wheat Field Under a Cloudy Sky painting (though I can’t now remember where).

It may have been from my poem "Wind in the Wheat" in my book "On the Edge of Knowing." It was inspired by Van Gogh's Wheat Field with Cypresses.
And a lovely piece! I love the second stanza.
I love this, Andy! I've been fascinated of late with the idea of a dark retreat (and have actually signed up for one, but it's not til 2027), so this poem landed into the pool of curiosity and pull for me! Thank you!
