Fur balls are the worlds finest teachers, aren’t they? I loved how much I saw myself and my own dog in this piece. Though, mine will accidentally wander off because the smells are just toooo good! I guess that has its own lesson in it 🤔

Anyways, I liked thinking about speed and agility on a canvas (an interesting pairing!) and this line had some lovely rhythm: “tongue set silly to the side.” 🥁

Keep sharing! Happy new year! Looking forward to more word and soul sharing in 2026.

Thanks for this comment, Paige! Yes, I’ve learned a lot from Ben over the last five years. Excited to continuing sharing this creative space with you in 2026. Happy New Year!

Love this! I have a poem about our dogs at the beach. It’s in my upcoming collection. Now we have an old lady who can’t join us at the dog park or the beach, so one of us stays home with her…heartbreaking, these last chapters with our most loving companions.

aren’t dogs saints on four legs?

I love this so much. I had to say goodbye to my soul dog in Sept and I can see so much of Zona in what you wrote. Brave and embodied. Curious and fast. Wild enough to lead, tender enough to return.

What gets me most is that last truth

wanting his own life but not wanting to go it alone.

That feels like the heart of loving an animal like them. They teach us how to move boldly into the world without severing the cord of love that steadies us. In that way, Zona is still teaching me. Still running ahead on the trail. Still glancing back :)

Thank you for sharing this

thanks for sharing the resonance this had for you, Bee. My dog Ben is only 5 years old and I really cannot think about life after him, he is such a constant source of companionship, humor, and love. A world without dogs would be so much darker

I love that you chose to write about this interaction with your dog. Something so a part of daily life, but also so significant. They do teach us so much, and offer powerful reflections on our own lives. Thank you for the smile this poem brought me on a tough day.

Bounding Ben, bud dog,

his and our hearts feel love’s tug.

Wild and tame, yes, both.
